Working With National Express to Profile Risk on Coach Routes

March 28, 2019

Over the last two months we have been working with National Express to see what type of analysis may be possible to assist them in identifying collision hotspots along coach routes, especially those involving vulnerable road users.  Using a variety of data sources matched to our bespoke UK roads network, we have produced an online demonstration dashboard that can be used to review various risk metrics on three test routes.  The solution goes far beyond our standard risk mapping solutions and incorporates telematics data from their fleet and also draws in incident data from video analytics.

The demonstration today at the national operations event in Coventry drew significant interest from operators and we are expecting to deliver a full national rollout across 150 routes in the coming months.

Is 9 Casualties Better Than 10? The challenge of evaluating with a lack of data and what we might do about it

For practitioners and advocates across our sector, Vision Zero is a moral goal, one which rightfully leads to us removing risk and creating layers of protection ‘systemically’ within the Safe System. But as we deliver this change together and casualty numbers on our roads (hopefully) come down, there is a challenge for evaluators: Less Data. How can we tell what works with a scarcity of outcome data?
