Earlier today the Reported road casualties Great Britain, provisional results: 2023 revealed that last year there was once again little change in the numbers of people killed or seriously injured on our roads.
While these figures are provisional and include some estimates due to missing data from certain police forces, they do highlight a worrying trend of a 6% increase in the number of pedestrian fatalities compared to the previous year.
It’s worth noticing that this is the only road user group for whom fatalities have been (slightly) increasing in the long term while others have been (slightly) declining. Reduced traffic doesn't prevent pedestrians being hit - in fact, the opposite may even be true.
The overall stagnation in casualty reduction over the last decade raises a critical question: What needs to be done to improve road safety in Great Britain?
We aim to answer this question in the next Joining the Dots webinar which will take place on Wednesday 12th June at 2pm – 3:30pm
In this special webinar we will be discussing the 2023 provisional data within a context of the Safe System. Richard Owen will be joined with Will Cubbin research director at RSGB and Dr Ian Greenwood along with a distinguished panel of other guests to try and answer this question.
As we approach the general election, it is crucial to consider the recommendations from the PACTS manifesto for road safety, which calls for a National Road Safety Strategy, a Road Safety Investigation Branch, Graduated Driver Licensing, and the adoption of the latest vehicle safety regulations.
Do you agree with these recommendations? What other measures do you think are needed to advance road safety and see a real improvement in casualty figures?
Join the panel discussion on Wednesday 12th June and take part in this important conversation. Registration is open via the link below.
